In response to the growing threat of AI-generated deepfakes and scams, McAfee, a global leader in online protection, announced the launch of the McAfee® Deepfake Detector. This new tool is the latest addition to McAfee’s suite of AI-powered products designed to help users identify fake content and navigate the online world more safely.

The launch comes as AI-created videos, or deepfakes, continue to flood the internet, raising concerns about misinformation and fraud. By teaming up with Lenovo, McAfee aims to bring advanced deepfake detection capabilities to consumers, starting with select Lenovo AI PCs available from August 21, 2024. The companies’ collaboration seeks to empower users by giving them tools to distinguish between real and fake content.

The McAfee Deepfake Detector utilizes advanced AI models trained on nearly 200,000 samples to identify manipulated audio and video content. Integrated into select Lenovo AI PCs, the tool analyzes videos directly on the device, leveraging Lenovo’s Neural Processing Unit (NPU). This on-device processing approach enhances privacy by keeping user data off the cloud while also improving processing speed and battery life.

“At McAfee, we’re inspired by the transformative potential of AI and are committed to helping shape a future where AI is used for good,” Majumder added. “Teaming up with Lenovo boosts our ability to deliver the most effective, automated, AI-powered deepfake detection, offering people a powerful digital guardian on their PCs.”

Lenovo echoed this sentiment, highlighting the growing concern around deepfakes and the need for more reliable detection tools. “The collaboration between Lenovo and McAfee combines the unique expertise of two global leaders to deliver innovative solutions that offers consumers more trust in the content they view online,” said Igor Bergman, Vice President of Lenovo Cloud and Software, Intelligent Devices Group. He noted that “data shows that nearly two-thirds of people (64 percent) are more concerned about deepfakes now than they were a year ago.”

In addition to the Deepfake Detector, McAfee has also launched the Smart AI Hub, an online platform offering educational resources on AI-driven scams and deepfakes. The Hub encourages consumers to participate in the fight against scams by submitting suspicious videos for analysis by McAfee’s AI technology.

Starting Aug. 21, 2024, the McAfee® Deepfake Detector is available for English language detection on select new Lenovo AI PCs ordered through Lenovo.com and select local retailers in the US, UK, and Australia. Lenovo AI PC customers will receive a free 30-day trial of the McAfee Deepfake Detector, with pricing in the US starting at $9.99 for the first year.
