An IT specialist was sentenced for 15 years after leaking sensitive military documents.

Jack Teixeira (22) shared hundreds of documents outlining important military secrets to his friends on Discord. He posted them in a server made for discussing guns and video games. The investigation found that he was sharing them to brag to his friends and look cool for knowing and being trusted with important secrets.

These documents included detailed information on the war in Ukraine, such as troop positioning, reports about Ukraine’s defenses, battlefield assessments, and more. It also included information about the US’s contacts, sources, and information-gathering methods. Finally, it included complex reports on military activities in the Middle East and Indo-Pacific.

The reports damage the reliability of the US’s information-gathering methods, as well as the national security of multiple nations, especially Ukraine.

In the past, Teixeira memorized secrets to share with the server later. As time went on, he became emboldened and began using a rarely-used printer in a corner of the military base where he was stationed to create copies of classified documents.

This went on for months. At multiple points, his supervisors noticed that he was viewing information he didn’t have security access to, but didn’t properly report the events.

Eventually, the FBI investigated him and requested the logs from Discord. This led to his arrest in April 2023. The logs revealed everything, from the documents he shared to the times he told strangers he couldn’t share certain logs over the risk of going to prison.

The whole situation led to multiple military reforms in an attempt to prevent this from happening again.

“The documents and information Teixeira posted to social media are highly classified and contain vital national defense information,” the court prosecutors argued. “By posting intelligence products on the social media platform Discord to feed his own ego and impress his anonymous friends, Teixeira caused exceptionally grave damage to the national security of the United States. The scope of his betrayal is breathtaking. The amount of damage he caused is immeasurable.”
