With a background that spans decades in technology and business management, Ronald brings a wealth of experience to his role at STX Next. From his early days as a software engineer to his executive roles at Microsoft and Honeywell, Ronald has consistently pushed the boundaries of what’s possible in technology, making him the ideal leader to guide STX Next into the future of AI and digital transformation.

Can you talk about your journey and how you became the CEO at STX Next?

My career has always revolved around pushing the boundaries of technology. I started as a software engineer nearly 30 years ago, in a R&D department at Software AG in Germany. My ways moved to business management and while becoming General Manager at Microsoft or President CEE for Honeywell my heart remained close to technology. In those times I was fortunate to be very close to the biggest trends in the industry such as Mobility, Cloud, and BigData, and impact the adoption of those trends in the CEE region. Consequently, after this year I decided to take things into your hands and drive the IT revolution from the first row.

Now, as the CEO of STX Next, I am in the position to do exactly this. Most importantly I can do that in a lean and agile way. Decisions are fast and powerful. I feel I can utilize my experiences and help transform the company into a shining star in the world of AI revolution. The talent in the company is incredible. Thank to the team the mission is not only great on the paper, but it is executed from day one.

Finally, it is a great trade-off. I am bringing my experiences to the table and at the same time learning a lot of new stuff. My leadership team is challenging me day by day with great questions and ideas. Lucky game for me 😉

AI is transforming many industries today. How does STX Next leverage AI to address the specific needs of your clients?

I would say that AI is actually starting to transform many industries as a trend. AI-related approaches are not new and there are areas of business, that are pretty advanced in their utilization of AI models. Nonetheless, the revolution did not even start yet. There are a lot of promises and ideas that will materialize – but more exciting is what we can not envision today. The big wow-effects are yet to come.

For STX Next this is a great playground. We are the ones who advise and implement what has to be done. Let’s be straightforward here – most businesses are not ready for AI because of how they utilized data in the past and because of the significant technology and architectural depths they are carrying. With over 20 years of experience in building digital systems, and solutions and executing transformational projects STX Next is in the best position to support our customers with the journey into the AI world. We ensure it is done properly and sustainably by building the best from the past with a great outlook for the future.

What are the most pressing challenges leaders face today, and how does STX Next help them navigate these challenges?

For today’s leaders, there is the ongoing challenge No. 1 – how to utilize extremely fast innovations into competitive advantages for the business. It sounds simple and it is anything but that.

As a leader, you need to understand which of the trends is a permanent one and how your fundamentals need to evolve to be able to utilize them. If this is not enough all this has to happen, while today’s operations need to run best possible. Leaders feel like they are developing and improving and flying airplanes.

Especially with AI, there is a moving target ahead of us because things are developing so fast. In the end, today’s leaders need to learn to take smart bets, react fast and be as agile as never before.

How do you see the role of AI in data engineering evolving, especially in terms of enhancing decision-making for businesses?

AI is set to significantly transform Data Engineering by automating and improving the accuracy and efficiency of data processes. Its role is expanding from handling large volumes of data to extracting valuable insights that aid in making more informed business decisions.

At STX Next, we use AI to refine the data lifecycle—from collection and cleansing to analysis—ensuring businesses can access and utilize high-quality data. This allows organizations to make decisions more quickly and accurately. As AI technology continues to evolve, we expect even more advanced tools and techniques to integrate seamlessly into business decision-making processes, driving ongoing growth and innovation.

As a leader in AI and software development, what advice would you give to businesses looking to integrate AI into their operations effectively?

Successfully integrating AI into operations involves thoughtful planning and a clear understanding of what you want to accomplish, still leaving solid parts open for the unknown. My key advice is to start by identifying a well-defined problem, even a small one, that AI can help solve. Next, look at the potential solution through AI in a much bigger context and try to foresee that you might be surprised by the new capabilities offered. Having this on your plate check how your fundamentals are prepared. Is your Data ready, what gaps in technology and processes are still there and would they be a show-stopper?

While preparing don’t assume all that you will do utilizing AI concepts will be a natural next step. Be ready to take a brand-new approach and leave things behind. This is probably the most challenging part. Here the human factor plays a huge role. Get your teams and your suppliers out of their comfort zones.

It’s very beneficial to collaborate with experienced partners who can provide comprehensive support throughout the process, from initial planning and education to implementation and scaling. Additionally, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous learning within your organization is crucial. This ensures that your team is aligned with your strategic objectives and stays capable of leveraging AI technologies effectively.

In the end, expect the unexpected but stay real. Learn from others, exchange ideas and be courageous. Small mistakes will happen but the gain might allow you to reach the unreachable from today’s perspectives.
