Short on time? Here’s the best Netflix alternative in 2024:
- Amazon Prime Video. It comes with a large catalog of titles, plus it allows you to rent or buy titles and add-on channels. What’s more, it’s available in most countries worldwide.
Netflix is one of the most popular streaming sites, but it isn’t everyone’s first choice. For example, you might be after features that Netflix doesn’t offer, like live TV or sports streams. Or, maybe you’ve simply binge-watched all of your favorite Netflix shows and movies and are ready for a new selection.
To make it easy for you to find some great Netflix alternatives, I created a list of the 5 best ones. I made my choices based on several criteria, including library size, ease of use, how frequently new titles are added, privacy, and more.
Pro Tip: With a VPN like ExpressVPN, you can protect your privacy while streaming online. VPNs have large server networks and work with all the streaming platforms on my list. Plus, the VPNs we recommend don’t keep any logs of what you do online, but we strongly recommend that you follow all applicable laws and regulations. At SafetyDetectives, we do not condone copyright infringement.
Editors' Note: ExpressVPN and this site are in the same ownership group.
5 Best Netflix Alternatives in 2024
1. Amazon Prime Video
Amazon Prime Video is my top Netflix alternative, as it offers a large catalog of live and on-demand content. It also gives you the option to rent and purchase movies, TV shows, and channels as an add-on. Moreover, it’s available in most countries worldwide.
I really like the Watch Videos Together feature, which allows you to watch streams in sync together with your friends. Plus, it’s compatible with Android, iOS, web browsers, gaming consoles, and smart TVs. You can also watch Prime Video content on 3 devices simultaneously.
If you have an Amazon Prime membership subscription, you already have access to Amazon Prime Video. When signing up you’ll need your name and mobile number or email address. The platform might use this data and your activity on the site to show recommended content or sell it to third parties.
2. Max
Max offers a diverse set of content, from popular HBO shows like The White Lotus to classic ones, like The Sopranos. It also includes kids’ shows, documentaries, sports events, and more. The streaming site is currently available in the US, Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
I found it very easy to navigate the interface. You can easily filter content with Just Added, Last Chance, Coming Soon, Trending Now, and Awards & Acclaim. Plus, the platform lets you stream content on different devices, like mobile devices, tablets, smart TVs, and gaming consoles.
If you have an HBO subscription, you get Max for free. The site offers a plan with ads and two plans without ads. However, Max collects your account, demographics, and viewing information, and it could share this data with its business partners and advertisers.
3. Disney+
Disney+ is a great Netflix alternative for families. It offers all the Pixar movies, Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Wars, and National Geographic content in one place. The platform is available in the US, Canada, Latin America, Asia-Pacific, and multiple countries in Europe.
I’m a big fan of the platform’s customizable features. For example, in the Profile section, you can restrict streaming to only Wi-Fi connections and set the quality of the videos to High, Medium, and Low. What’s more, Disney+ is available on smart TVs, macOS, Windows PC, mobile, tablets, and gaming consoles.
The Disney+ Premium plan comes with no ads and the ability to download content and watch it on the go. The site might collect your email address, name, and activity on the site to target you with ads and recommend content.
4. Apple TV+
Apple TV+ comes with ad-free original content. Although its library size is smaller than the other options on this list, Apple TV+ regularly adds new content. It’s also great that it’s available in most countries around the world.
You can watch Apple TV+ content on Apple devices, gaming consoles, and smart TVs. If you have an Android TV, you can access Apple TV+ content with Chromecast. Moreover, the platform allows you to stream content on 6 devices simultaneously.
The site collects information on your activity within the app, downloads, purchases, and where you watch its content. It uses this data to show you personalized content and show you relevant ads on the App Store, Apple News, and Stocks. The good news is that you can change this in your settings.
5. Hulu
Hulu is a great Netflix alternative if you’re based in the US. It gives access to a wide range of movies and TV shows, including its originals and some popular classics. You can also get access to live TV, Disney+, and ESPN+ with its bundles.
This streaming site releases new episodes of popular TV shows around a day after they were shown on TV — which is quite fast. In addition, Hulu has support for web browsers, mobile devices, gaming consoles, smart TVs, and Amazon devices.
Hulu offers an affordable basic plan but with ads. You can also upgrade to a plan without ads and get access to features like offline in-app downloads. However, I don’t like that Hulu collects your data and keeps track of the videos you watch and might share this information with its service providers and advertisers.
Why You Need a VPN for Safe Streaming on Sites Like Netflix
Sites like Netflix are generally very safe to use since they’re premium services and don’t come with the same security risks as free sites. That said, they still collect data about you like your IP address, streaming activity, location, and more.
That’s why security tools like a VPN can be very beneficial. The main job of a VPN is to encrypt your traffic, making it unreadable to third parties. For example, if you’re streaming on an unsecured public Wi-Fi network, a VPN makes it more difficult for hackers to intercept and view your data.
They also hide your location by assigning you a new IP address from the VPN’s servers. This means the sites you visit won’t know your exact location or real IP, which helps protect your privacy. This helps prevent advertisers and other third-parties from tracking you.
Also, some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) throttle bandwidth when they detect heavy data usage, which can include streaming. This can result in buffering and lower-quality video. Using a VPN makes it more difficult for your ISP to apply these throttling measures.
